5 Of-the-Moment Sandal Trends

When it came to setting the sandal trends for summer 2019, designers sent shoes down the runway that were anything but basic. From highly embellished heels and eye-catching animal prints to thoroughly modern minimalism, there’s something for every style in this year’s assortment of sandals. Read on for all the details on five of our favorite sandal trends, plus how we’re planning to wear them this summer.

Sporty Sandals

Perhaps the most unexpected shoe trend of 2019, Tevas are having a serious high fashion moment! These practical sandals were once relegated to your dad’s vacation wardrobe, but they’ve been reinvented thanks to turns on the runway from designers including Sandy Liang, Prada, and Anna Sui. Thanks to fashion-minded updates like platform soles, pops of neon, and iridescent details, sporty sandals are now among the most stylish options for summer. We’re planning to wear our sporty pairs with breezy shorts and wide-legged crops for casual days around town, or feminine dresses in gauzy fabrics for a study in contrast.

Oceanic Embellishments

Nothing says summer quite like a day at the beach, and designers dove into maritime-inspired accents for their summer sandals. Milly and Michael Kors were feeling just beachy for 2019 with embellishments that included seashell charms, sparkly starfish, woven rope straps, and even hints of fishnet. Keep the rest of your look simple when showing off these quirky pairs. We recommend a simple jeans-and-white-tee combination, or a sundress in a solid hue that lets the shoes take center stage—all accessorized with a just-back-from-the-beach tan, of course.

Walk on the Wild Side

Animal print has been one of the defining trends in apparel and accessories for the last few years, and it shows no signs of abating when it comes to summer shoes for 2019. Zimmermann, Calvin Klein, and Christian Siriano were among the top designers who went wild for animal prints this season, showing off everything from sky-high zebra stripe heels to chunky snakeskin mules and leopard flats with a ladylike pointed toe. We love the look of animal print when worn with vibrant pops of color—think saturated coral or a vivid neon pink. If you’re feeling especially bold, you can also try out a bit of pattern mixing; consider pairing an animal print with stripes or florals for a runway-ready combination. In a similar vein, designers including Pamella Roland and Prabal Gurung showed off sandals topped with floaty feathers for summer. We’ll be rocking our feathered pairs with a sleek jumpsuit for a going-out ensemble that’s chic, playful, and unexpected.

Elevated Embroidery

When it comes to the next trend on our list, the beauty is in the details. Incredibly intricate embroidery was one of the hottest looks on summer 2019 runways, taking a turn at Michael Kors, Alberta Ferretti, and more. Floral patterns were the most popular embroidered option, though more abstract motifs also made an appearance. Platform sandals are the most common shoe silhouette to showcase this trend, though we also spotted a large number of Western-inspired styles. When it comes to rocking an embroidered look for summer, we recommend keeping the rest of your ensemble simple to let the shoes shine. Try a pair of embroidered platforms with a sweet midi skirt for the perfect date-night look, or wear Western-style sandals with cutoff shorts and a tee for summer music festivals.

Barely-There Straps

Balancing out the bold look of the pairs above, we also saw an abundance of incredibly elegant, minimalist sandals for summer. Inspired by the styles of the late 1990s and early 2000s, some trend reports are calling these strappy pairs the “naked sandal.” The Row and Saint Laurent took the lead on this look, showcasing super-skinny straps, neutral shades, and mid-height heels that felt like a flashback (in a good way!) to Carrie’s shoe styles on Sex and the City. Because these sandals are so simple, they’re the perfect match for splashy ensembles. Wear a barely-there pair with your boldest animal print, bright florals, or highly textured fabrics for a fashion-forward summer look.
